In the vibrant city of Atlanta, Georgia, where dreams flourish and communities thrive, the story of Ocasio Feliciano, affectionately known as Ciodadon, is a poignant reminder of both the fragility of life and the enduring strength of a mother’s love. On what seemed to be an ordinary day, the first day back to school after Christmas break, Ocasio’s life was senselessly cut short in a tragic incident that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Ocasio, a bright and promising young man, had just gotten off the school bus around 3 PM and decided to spend some time with a friend from school at a nearby park. As the hours passed, he remained in touch with his mother, Twina Feliciano, assuring her at 6:51 PM that he would be home shortly. Ocasio was always known for his responsiveness in keeping his mother informed of his whereabouts. However, as the clock struck 7:30 PM and darkness began to settle, Twina’s concern grew when her calls and texts went unanswered—a stark deviation from Ocasio’s usual behavior.
As worry turned into dread, Twina took to the streets, driving through the neighborhood, calling family members and praying fervently for her son’s safety. The night took a devastating turn when the doorbell rang, revealing a police officer and a detective at her doorstep. The detective’s words were like daggers to her heart: Ma’am, do you know an Ocasio Feliciano?” Twina, wide− eyed and filled with apprehension, responded, “Yes, that is my son.” The detective then delivered the unimaginable news: Ocasio had passed away from injuries sustained in a senseless altercation at the park where he had been shot eight times in the back, buttocks, and thigh. Overwhelmed with grief, Twina fell to her knees in disbelief and began to pray. This heartbreaking loss has not only shattered a family but also ignited a powerful mission to prevent our everyday locations in America from being killing fields and advocating to curb the alarming rate of shootings of our youth. Twina Feliciano, a dedicated financial wellbeing coach, serial entrepreneur and community economic development advocate, has channeled her grief into action, establishing the Ocasio Feliciano Foundation. This foundation, in partnership with Leadcenterforyouth.org, aims to empower young people and foster safe environments for their growth and development.
The foundation’s initiatives are multifaceted, focusing on social−emotional learning through engaging cartoons featuring Ciodadon, targeting school systems nation−wide and providing apprenticeships for youth during and after high school. These programs are designed to equip young people with the skills and emotional resilience needed to navigate life’s challenges and thrive in their communities.
Ocasio’s offender has taken a plea from the Fulton County DA’s office and is currently serving his 25yr. sentence. Twina’s advocacy extends to a critical dialogue on gun laws in America. She emphasizes that while responsible gun ownership is a right, the unchecked carrying and misuse of firearms have devastating consequences. The loss of Ocasio underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations to prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands and being used in moments of anger or impulsiveness.
In memory of Ocasio, Twina envisions a world where every young person can pursue their dreams without fear of violence. She believes that through education, community support, and sensible gun laws, we can create safer futures for all our children. Coach CJ Stewart, with Leadcenterforyouth.org, a close mentor to Ocasio, shared a special bond with him over their mutual love for baseball and music. His support for the foundation highlights the community’s commitment to honoring Ocasio’s legacy and ensuring that his spirit continues to inspire and uplift others.
